O artista suíço Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859 - 1923) criava pôsteres calorosos e íntimos de artistas de cabarés e salas de música. Inicialmente imprimindo tecidos, Steinlen mudou-se para Montmartre, o bairro boêmio de Paris, onde seu estilo Art Nouveau floresceu na atmosfera avant-garde. Enquanto vivia por lá ele criou diversos anúncios, assim como centenas de ilustrações para revistas e pôsteres para casas noturnas característicos que mostravam gatos, que eram sua marca registrada. Além dos pôsteres, ele também é conhecido por seus retratos de cenas cotidianas da classe trabalhadora parisiense que mostram uma grande sensibilidade em relação aos indivíduos mostrados.
