O artista japonês Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) foi um mestre da impressão em blocos de madeira Ukiyo-e. Sua série monumental criada em Ukiyo-e, que significa “retratos do mundo flutuante” foi “Trinta e Seis Visualizações do Monte Fuji”, que incluía o famoso “A Grande Onda de Kanagawa”. Entre 1796 e 1820 ele criou aproximadamente trinta mil ilustrações de livros e gravuras impressas, produzindo seus trabalhos mais importantes após os 60 anos, muitas vezes retratando o Monte Fuji como um símbolo espiritualmente importante. Impressionistas como Monet, Degas e Toulouse-Lautrec apreciavam o trabalho de Hokusai com entusiasmo.
